Biodigester in operation at Sutas, Turkey
Date: 01-05-2011BGP Engineers and Biogas Plus havee realized one of Turkey’s first biogas plants for the digestion of cow manure. The project took place in Karacabey at Tarfaş, part of Sütaş Group, a market leader in fresh dairy products in Turkey.
Manure from the dairy farm is digested in a 1900 m3 digester. The resulting biogas is converted to “green” electricity in an high-efficiency generator of 350 kW(e). The project is realized under turn-key management by BGP Engineers, the plant design is based on proven technology of Biogas Plus and M.A.N. Civil works were realized by HB Dekorayson of Izmir. Features of the plant are the earthquake-resistant construction of the installation, the stable and highly efficient digestion process, the flexibility for handling different kinds of substrates and the remote monitoring and control of the digestion and electricity generation processes. The design of the project also takes into account likely future expansion of the installation. It is envisaged that the project will be able produce some 2,5 million kWh per year.
Besides the construction of the installation itself, training activities took place both in the Netherlands and in Turkey. The project has resulted in a modern biogas installation, the production of green electricity, spin-off activities and numerous knowledge-sharing activities on biogas technology, resulting in economic cooperation between the Netherlands and Turkey.
The plant has become operational in March 2011 when it had started to deliver green electricity to the network.
