CDM for landfills in Indonesia
Date: 28-01-2011This month, BGP was informed that the CDM-project for its Indonesian landfill project has been succesfully validated by SGS, a leading certification company with offices all around the world. For BGP and its partners this is a major step forward and it paves the road for the implementation of the project in several locations in Indonesia.
In early 2006 BGP has started to explore the possibilties for developing Climate Change projects in Indonesia's waste sector. During 2006 and 2007 more than 35 cities across the country were visited by a team of experts. Each expert visited the municipal landfills and assessed its feasibility for development under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Major part of the landfills in Indonesia release substantial amounts of Methane, the second important greenhouse gas. The CDM-project envisages the capture and utilization of the methane.
From this work, a group of 8 project resulted and in 2007 the CDM-project was started when stakeholders were consulted, technical investigations were done and calculation of the potential emission reduction was performed.
The project has been submitted for registration at the Executive Board of the UNFCCC at Bonn, Germany.
